Candlelight Stroll around Niagara on the Lake
As Christmas 2012 approaches, Niagara-on-the-Lake gears up for another series of festive activities. The pretty town is the perfect setting for Christmas and is a great place to come and stay in one of the many bed & breakfasts, if you are not fortunate enough to live here already!
Last Saturday evening saw the first event of the season – the Candlelight Stroll. As a crowd gathered beside the clock tower on Queen Street, in front of the old Town Hall on a chilly and slightly damp evening, there was festive music from the Salvation Army Band and some short speeches while everyone collected their candles and prepared for the stroll.
To the uninitiated, the stroll involves a walk around many of the historic streets of Old Town – Niagara on the Lake, candle in hand, admiring the Christmas decorations bestowed upon many of the beautiful old homes in town. At a number of points along the way, there are a series of choirs and musicians to keep the passers-by entertained and uplifted.
The horse-drawn carriages continued around town, allowing their passengers to take in the sights. They always seem to add to the festive backdrop with the clip clop of hooves!
As the stroll drew to a close, the Nativity display on King Street signified the final sight and then attention turned to which pub or restaurant to warm up in! A thoroughly enjoyable event and well worth a visit.
If you are considering moving to the area, put it on your list of things to see and do next year!
