I was sitting in my Niagara Homes office on Friday afternoon, finishing off details of a home I am hoping to list then I began to think about the weekend ahead. With fantastic weather and a few steaks in the fridge at home, my first thought was the evening`s BBQ and which beer to have with it!
My wife and I had received an email from friends, inviting us sailing on Saturday afternoon. We packed some snacks and drinks – lots of water to keep hydrated – and set off for Port Weller Marina. This is a great little marina with an informal feel. There is a nice restaurant and take out and everyone seems to have set up their own little cooking area with tents, BBQ, picnic tables, etc. Anyway, we met our friends, got the boat ready and set off for the afternoon. A steady breeze and moderate waves ensured an interesting afternoon of sailing! When the combination of heat and physical exertion had taken it`s toll, we returned to the harbour and just sat around chatting until it was time to go home.
That evening, we had a group of friends coming around for dinner. Everyone brought something and we all just sat around outside eating and drinking and chatting. Two of our friends had brought drums and harmonicas with them, along with backing tracks, courtesy of an iphone and mini speaker! I got my drum out and a good time was had by all – hopefully including the neighbours!
Sunday morning was a quiet start to the day with a fresh pot of coffee and croissants in the back yard. Normally, I would be doing an Open House but this Sunday, my wife and I decided to go out for the day with a picnic and visit some wineries.
We arrived at Calamus Winery at about 1pm and had some wine tastings. We have been to this winery before and love it`s rustic and informal charm and great wines. The other bonus is, they are happy for you to picnic on their property so a glass of red wine and a picnic table were obtained, then out came the picnic cool box!
Afterwards, we headed off for a new winery we had heard about – Vieni. They had some great wines and they had a new wood fired pizza oven outside they were trying out – free pizza – it does not get better than that! Having stayed here about an hour, chatting with visitors to the area and purchasing a bottle, we headed off to the third and final winery of the day – The Organized Crime Winery. This one is beautifully situated right on the Lake. A few more tastings, another purchase and a walk to the lake, then we decided it was time to go home.
Having had two lunches, we decided that dinner was not really necessary so we just sat in the back yard and watched the sunset.
A great end to a fun-packed weekend.
