No, I have not started selling real estate in Florida, though it is a tempting idea! It is simply that in spite of the fact we live in a beautiful area with many things to do, this winter has been the harshest in over 20 years and has dragged on rather longer than usual. It reached the point where my wife stated she wanted to see green grass and feel some sunny heat, even if for just a week.
Having convinced me to go to Tampa/St. Petersburg, we booked the trip and went south. There were a number of things that surprised me. Firstly, return flights from Buffalo Airport were under $600.00 for two people, and the flight is only 2 hours 15 minutes long! The other point is that it takes just 45 minutes to get to the airport from our Niagara home – quicker than Toronto – and the airport itself is small enough to get around easily. Parking was easy, check-in was quick. Apart from me picking up the wrong passport, discovering this fact half wa to Fort Erie, and having to drive home to get the right one, it was an extremely easy and painless journey.
We had a great time in Florida, visiting the Kennedy Space Centre, meeting some friends near Cape Canaveral, spending time on Madeira Beach and visiting the pretty village of Dundedin during a classic car show and a farmers market! The little harbour area of John’s Pass was fun to visit and we took a boat trip around the bay to see dolphins. Please to say we saw about a dozen!
We visited the Dali Gallery in St Petersburg which was fantastic and had a great lunch near the harbour and marina area. Visiting Tampa, we discovered the Cuban district of Ybor which had great restaurants and shopping – a very lively area with lots of music and a great Visitor Centre.
We had our final breakfast at a beachside café in the little residential area of Pass-a-Grille. 27 degrees c at 11am on March 3rd? Not bad!
A week is a very short time which passed too quickly but having discovered lots of interesting things to see and do, we will be back. Especially as the trip was so quick and easy from our Niagara home.
